Tuition and Fees

The 2009-2010 tuition rates for the MFA program are $410 per credit hour, or $4,920 per semester, well below the national average for low residency MFA programs.

Upon acceptance, a $500 deposit is required to hold the student's place in the program. This deposit is non-refundable and is applied to tuition.
Full payment of tuition and registration fees are due two weeks before the beginning of the residency (May 14 for the Summer Residency and Fall Mentoring Semester, and December 15 for the January Residency and Winter/Spring Mentoring Semester) and may be sent by check or money order, paid by Visa or MasterCard by phone before arrival at the residency. Tuition is nonrefundable after the tuition payment deadline.

Housing Costs-January Residency

2009 room and board plans for the January residency total $45 a night for shared rooms. This includes both the room rate and all meals. A few single rooms are available for $55 per night, including meals.

Some campus housing is available during the January residency, but affordable housing options are abundant near the college. Dining hall plans are available in January, or students may choose from a variety of dining options in the Spartanburg community.

Financial Aid

Many students choose student loan funds to assist with their educational costs in the MFA program. You do not have to demonstrate “financial need” to secure a Federal Stafford Loan, but you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and complete the Converse MFA Financial Aid Application. Return the MFA application to the Office of Financial Aid. The priority deadline for applying for federal financial aid is February 15. For more information on how to apply for subsidized and non-subsidized student loans, contact the Office of Financial Aid: (864) 596-9019.

A limited number of partial work scholarships are available for qualified second year MFA students. Contact the MFA director for additional information.
